    Salisbury Hebrew School - 1960s

The Salisbury Hebrew School's full name was the Salmon Margolis Hebrew School located at Park St.

    According to Marvyn Hatchuel ....

"The Salmon Margolis school shared premises with the Nursery School using the facilities in the afternoon.  It was established many years before the 1950s.   Aliza Hatchuel z'l was Principal of the S.M. Hebrew School  (Cheder) from 1956-1963. She also taught the first classes at Sharon School from its inception.  She  gave up her position at the S.M. Hebrew School once Sharon School was well on its way, so as to give full attention to Sharon School which was expanding  each year.  Previous to Aliza taking over as Principal of the S.M.H.S the principal was a Mr Martin Bloch who happened to be my Hebrew teacher when I lived in London."

The following is a short biography by the grandson of one if its Headmasters Mr Mordechai Harary and attached are some of the detailed - hand-written reports that he produced during his work at the school  in the 1960s.

Mordechai Harary Lodz, Poland 1912 Netanya, Israel 1986

My late Grandfather Mordechai Harary arrived in Salisbury to take up the position of headmaster of the Salisbury Hebrew School in the year 1964 until 1967. During these years he wrote a ledger detailing the educational process of the school, his achievements and difficulties, and the general situation of the children of the Jewish community of Salisbury.

I have scanned a few pages of the ledger in order to enable alumni and researchers access to this historical document of the Jewish community of Salisbury.

At the end of his tenure he moved to Johannesburg where he became the Headmaster of Arcadia. There he was known as "cop" Harary, but was fondly called "Aba" by hundreds of his pupils even when they themselves became grandparents.

In the seventies he and his faithful companion Yehudit, made aliyah to Netanya where he continued to teach Hebrew until he passed away in 1986.

He was loved and remembered by his family and many many pupils.
