Savyon Lodge Emergency Appeal to the Zimbabwean Jewish Community and Ex-Zimbabwean Jewry and Others Abroad

    Dear Friends,

This is a desperate appeal of assistance from all who can help to ensure the survival of Savyon Lodge in Bulawayo as the only old age home for Zimbabwean Jewry. As the Zimbabwean Jewish Community ages more and more, with most of their grown-up children having moved to pastures new, the needs for Savyon Lodge have increased greatly.

Until now Savyon Lodge has, for almost 40 years, been able to service all its running costs from the amounts payable for board and lodging by the residents, and from generous donations received from time to time. However, Savyon is now faced with crisis circumstances. As inflation has impacted upon the very necessary expenditures, charges to residents have been proportionaly increased. These increases, including an unavoidable 150% increase from 1st August, 2005, have raised the charges to levels which are exceptionally burdensome for many of the residents. Concurrently, Savyon’s inflows from donations have inevitably diminished as a result of the ongoing shrinkage of the Zimbabwean Jewish Community.

A crisis has now arisen, in that Government has promulgated a retrospective wage (and allowances) increase, effective from 1st April, 2005. The effect of that increase is that Savyon Lodge must fund back-pay of Z$227 500 000, and its ongoing monthly wages and allowances costs rise by Z$56 875 000 per month.

In these desperate and catastrophic circumstances, Savyon Lodge appeals for those, in Zimbabwe and abroad, who are able to do so, to donate generously in order to alleviate the unsustainable burden. Any contributions will be very greatly appreciated, be they on a monthly, half- yearly, or annual basis. Moreover, with the recent significant movement in the official rates of exchange, every US$1000 (or equivalent in other currencies) yields approximately Z$18 000 000.

You can also read a recent Jewish Telegraph Agency (JTA) report which was published on many websites and the Jerusalem Post.

We have the amazing support of an organisation known as ChaiSouthAfrica which supports old-age homes in Southern Africa. They have not only provided generous support but have offered themselves as a conduit for donations to Savyon. ChaiSouthAfrica has been given an anonymous and generous pledge to match every US$ raised - what a challenge to us all. Please click here to see the donation form from ChaiSouthAfrica.

For further details on the background to this appeal and how you can contribute to Savyon - see the links on the left hand menu of this page or click here.

    With kind regards

    Hylton Solomon
